DILI, 24 April 2020 (TATOLI) – Health officials will screen visitors to Liquiça District hospital, following a cluster of Covid-19 cases there, in a bid to identify any possible community transmission.

The number of people with confirmed cases of Covid-19 in Timor-Leste remains at 23, officials from the Integrated Crisis Management Centre (CIGC) confirmed yesterday. One patient has recovered.

Two teachers from Liquiça, one of whom has returned to Portugal, have confirmed cases of the virus. A number of others are in isolation with “probable” infections. But CIGC spokeswoman, Dr Odete da Silva Viegas, said there are no plans yet to lockdown the district completely.

“We will apply [a lockdown] when local transmission is detected. That’s why we are giving orientation to the Health Director in Liquiça to screen patients…to identify [any] propagation of Covid-19,” she told reporters on Wednesday.

“Because the mother is positive for Covid-19, she is now receiving special treatment at the Vera Cruz Health Centre. While her baby is in Farol Hotel [and] being taken care of by his uncle,” Dr Viegas said.

More than 2.6 million people have contracted the virus worldwide since the outbreak was first identified in China on New Year’s Eve. According to the World Health Organisation, 187,420 people have died from the disease, while 733,993 have recovered.
