DÍLI, july 9, 2020 (TATOLI) – The Japanese Government has donated US$2.5 million to help with the development project of a Birth Certificate Registration system in the country.
The Japanese Government funds the project via the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) in Timor-Leste.
Japan’s Ambassador to Timor-Leste, Masami Kinefuchi, said the program aims to expedite the birth registration of all children in Timor-Leste.
“These records are vital. The State has an obligation to identify each child, to give them access to basic social services, such as health care, education and social security,” Masami Kinefuchi.
Additionally, he said the purpose of the project is to raise the total registration for children under the age of five to a standard of 80%.
UNICEF Deputy Representative, Scoot Whoolery, recalled that UNICEF in Timor-Leste delivered the Demography Management Information System (SIGD) to the Ministry of Justice, within the scope of the Development Project for Birth Registration System in Timor-Leste.
“The new installation of the SIGD aims to improve the registration system in Timor-Leste. It is important that birth registration services are available and accessible to everyone,” She said.
And the National Department for Notary Service is currently identified Manatutu, Manufahi and Oe-Cusse district to continue to register the birth of children.
In addition to the delivery of the Demography Management Information System (SIGD) to the Ministry of Justice received five computers, five printers, thirteen modems and a new server were also delivered.
The Minister of Justice, Manuel Cárceres, thanked the Government of Japan and UNICEF for supporting Timor-Leste.
