DILI 10 august 2020 (TATOLI)- TL-Ministry of Finance has signed a $8.55million budget agreement with the World Bank for the implementation of two programs such as Basic Education Strengthening and Transformation project running over the next five year 2020-2025.
The agreement was signed by the Minister of Finance Fernando Hanjam, Minister of Education Armindo Maia and the Representative from the World Bank, Macmillan Anyanwu, at TL Finance Office Aitarak Laran Dili.
The project titled ‘BEST’ will be implemented for five years, between 2020 and 2025, aim of strengthening teacher training and providing learning and evaluation tools, in addition to the proper use of the planning process, based on the data provided.
The World Bank has already mobilised an additional fund for the $15 million loan arrangements, which will focus on the construction and rehabilitation of classrooms.
Although approval of the loan fund is still suspended, it is part of the design component, whose total budget approximately US$23.5 million.
“the intention of the project is to focus on construction and rehabilitation of school classrooms,” Minister of Finance Fernando Hanjam said.
Mr. Hajam said, the investment for the education sector is relevant and important as many countries have invested in their people to support the process of development.
“I am waiting to cooperate together to reach our propose, to find good results which will strengthen the education for children in our country and potentially transform our nation from this initiative,” he said.
Also, the Minister of Education, Armindo Maia, expressed his wish that the conclusion of the loan for concession will be signed, so it awaits the last decision by the Council of Ministers as well as the approval of the General State Budget (OGE) 2020.
The BEST project, worth US$23.5 million, will be implemented over the next five years. Of this budget, US$15 million is earmarked for the World Bank’s concessionary loan, while the remaining US$8.6 million comes from the Global Education Partnership.
