DÍLI, august 12, 2020 (TATOLI) – The Coordinator of the Xanana Reading Room (XRR), Manuel Ribelo Soares, encourages the youth to familiarise themselves with reading to increase personal knowledge.
The request is made during the campaign regarding the importance of reading, with the theme ”Hakbi’it foin sa’e sira liu hosi kultura le’e,” (Empowering Youth through Cultural Reading)
“Our wish is that youths are not just political instruments, but instead, they are familiar with reading to become inspirations to others. Through reading, they can learn many things and find out how vast the world is,” he said.
According to him, XRR does not yet have statistical data on how many people visit this place or how many do regular reading. Through their observations every day they are able to say that any number between three and ten come into XRR to read.
To empower the youth to become more avid readers, the XRR is open to anyone who would like to come in and read.
“We always support our youth to stand tall and become an example to others in Timor-Leste. To be a good young person you have to read a lot as it will help you to become stronger to build a country,” he said
He also added that the XRR had provided an opportunity for the youths to change themselves via the Youth Community Care, which remains standing to this day.
“The importance of reading” campaign is to celebrate World Youth Day. XRR was established in the year 2000, as a place of non-profit, aimed at assisting the public, especially communities and students to access books, libraries, educational resources internet and others.
