IGT identifies 400 companies unable to pay workers since there is less revenue

DILI, 26 October 2020 (TATOLI)– The Worker General Inspector, Rofino Lopes dos Reis, said that many companies have been experiencing difficulties in paying their workers as the covid-19 situation has lowered their income and several companies have been threatened with postponing their economic activity.

“We have identified almost 400 companies experiencing difficulties in paying their workers, for such reason some of them are mostly violated the working policy,” Worker General Inspector told Tatoli via phone.

The inspection that is made by the inspector shows that this actual situation has caused several international companies decided to suspend their activities since there is no revenue.

Companies such as East Timor Trading Group has had to cease partial Economic activities, and they have suspended 30 employees from their Burger King and Discovery Inn businesses.

“There are two Burger king’s that have closed, the one located at the National Airport of Nicolau Lobato and another one located in Bidau, Discovery Inn has also suspended 14 more workers,” he said.

He realised this situation would affect many private sectors and their workers as this situation continues.

Mr.Reis based on the data from Business Registration Services (SERVE), that has listed more than 100 companies have suffered during the COVID-19 restriction.

The IGT also has detected the serious situation regarding the worker authorisation visa and the detail of health security.

“Example the construction of the roads and the bridges mostly the workers are not wearing the protective equipment,” he said.

Same to the State of Emergency, IGT noted many infractions toward the right of the workers.

“We see mostly link to the salary of the workers, the actual situation has almost caused the downfall of the companies, several companies are delaying the payments of the salary, and some are to stop the workers from their work,” he explains.

So far, during the covid-19 restriction, the General Inspection has visited 800 companies.
