EU proud to contribute for the delivering of the first COVAX facility to Timor-Leste

DILI, 5 april, 2021 (TATOLI)- The European Union is proud that UNICEF, through the COVAX Facility, has transported the AstraZeneca vaccine with the 24-dose to Timor-Leste.

EU considers these doses are the first of several COVAX deliveries that altogether will allow for the vaccination of 20% of the Timorese population.

Team Europe is proud to contribute to the COVAX facility, helping to provide for affordable and fair access to vaccines for Timorese people, in partnership with the World Health Organization (WHO), GAVI global initiative, and UNICEF.

“I am delighted that today we have the first delivery of COVAX vaccines to Dili, Timor-Leste. The COVAX Facility is a great illustration of global solidarity. This is real multilateralism in action. The European Union is proud to join the Government of Timor-Leste, the WHO, UNICEF, and many other contributors to make this happen. I pay tribute to the front line health workers and to all those in Timor-Leste who work tirelessly in the battle against COVID-19. Team Europe will continue to stand by the people of Timor-Leste”. The European Union Ambassador Andrew Jacobs said in a statement.

EU top priority is Making sure everyone has access to safe and effective COVID-19 vaccines.

Under the Team Europe approach, the EU has to-date committed USD 2.6 billion to the COVAX Facility to enable 92 low and middle-income countries, including Timor-Leste, to have access to 1.3 billion COVID-19 vaccines.

The European Union’s assistance does not stop at transporting vaccines. Deliveries are an important first step, but they would be useless in countries without sufficient capacity within their national health systems to implement vaccination campaigns.

On 18 January, the European Union in Timor-Leste made available nearly USD 2.4 million (EURO 2 million) to WHO Timor-Leste to support its work with the Ministry of Health to mitigate the health impacts of communicable diseases – particularly of COVID-19 – and to contribute to building strong, effective and resilient health systems in Timor-Leste

Since April 2020, the value of Team Europe support for Timor-Leste’s Covid-19 response has amounted to more than USD 5 million.

Team Europe’s €40 billion global recovery package has the overall mission of supporting partner countries worldwide in the fight against the coronavirus pandemic and its consequences, which involves addressing the immediate health emergency and humanitarian needs, strengthening health systems and supporting the economic recovery and social protection.

Team Europe – the European Union, its Member States and the European Investment Bank – is a leading contributor to the COVAX multilateral initiative, with over EUR 2.2/USD 2.6 billion.
