DILI, 16 april 2021 (TATOLI)-EU has allocated €100,000 in emergency funding to respond to the humanitarian needs resulting from severe floods and passage of tropical Cyclone Seroja in Timor-Leste.
“We offer our sincere condolences to the families of the victims of Cyclone Seroja. Our thoughts are with those who lost their homes and livelihoods. We announce this emergency funding in a spirit of solidarity that will support Timor-Leste and Indonesia in their efforts to overcome this natural disaster, as well as the COVID-19 pandemic. The EU stands ready to step up support for those in need.” Commissioner for Crisis Management, Janez Lenarčič said in a statement.
The €100,000 will be allocated to support the most affected population in Dili and other municipalities, especially vulnerable households and women and girls, impacted by the recent floods.
EU humanitarian aid will support partner organisations to directly assist 200 households (1140 people) affected by flooding and landslides in April 2021 through provision of cash and technical support for improved shelter for the most severely affected households.
The project will also emphasise the participation and inclusion of women, girls and other marginalised groups in emergencies, with a focus on identifying and increasing their meaningful participation in humanitarian decision-making.
The EU funding is made available via the European Civil Protection and Humanitarian Aid Operations (ECHO) through its Small-Scale Response mechanism.
in spite ECHO is a Small-Scale Response fund is a global mechanism, which allows for rapid funding for humanitarian aid in countries affected by natural and man-made disasters.
The EU and its Member States are also supporting Timor-Leste in their joint global fight against the COVID-19 pandemic, including as the largest global contributor to COVAX.
