Ambassador of Japan and SEJD celebrate TL’s participation in Tokyo Olympics

DILI, 26 june 2021 (TATOLI)– The Ambassador of Japan in Timor-Leste (TL) with the Secretary of Youth and Sports (SEJD) celebrates TL’s participation in the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.

The Japanese Ambassador in TL, Masami Kinefuchi, last friday night (25/06), hosted a reception celebrating the Tokyo Olympics and Timor’s participation by inviting the Timorese delegation to the Tokyo Olympics at his residence, held with minimal invitations and according to the COVID protocol.

The audience that marked present in the ceremony were Secretary of State for Youth and Sports, Abrão Saldanha, Vice President of the National Olympic Committee, Mateus da Cruz de Carvalho, President of the Federation of Sports and Athletics Federations, Afranio Xavier and former Timorese Olympic athletes, Aguida Amaral, Augusto Ramos and Francelina.

Cabral. Masami is very happy because Japan will receive a delegation from TL to participate in one of the world’s prestigious sports events, namely the 2020 Tokyo Olympics which was postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

“I wish the best for TL athletes in this Olympics, showing the TL flag at the Tokyo Olympic stadium is a piece of history for the future, I believe the Japanese people and the whole world will be happy for this,” said Masami Kinefuchi at his residence.

Masami appreciates the efforts of members of the National Olympic Committee and the Sports and Athletics Federations to organize various Olympic events in TL in order to improve the abilities of athletes and prepare them to represent TL in the world.

The Secretary of State for Youth and Sports, Abrão Saldanha hopes that TL’s participation in this year’s Tokyo Olympics, will not only show another commitment from the TL government, but to see TL’s participation in a new color that will lead to future sporting success.

“I thank all the entities involved for their work, and I want to thank the ambassador in particular for his efforts and personal contribution to this,” he said. Timor-Leste will be represented by 3 talented athletes in the prestigious 32nd Tokyo Olympics, scheduled to be held in Tokyo, Japan, from 24 July to 9 August 2021.

In march 2020, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) decided to postpone the Olympics for a year due to the COVID-19 virus pandemic. Thus, the IOC has stated that this summer’s Olympics will open on July 23, 2021, exactly one year from the original schedule. Imelda Felicyta Ximenes Belo and José João da Silva Viegas will represent TL in swimming, and Felisberto de Deus will represent TL in athletics.

“We are grateful to the Japanese Embassy and the TL Government along with other entities for all the efforts given to us,” said Imelda, a representative for the swimming branch. The Timor-Leste delegation will depart from Dili for Japan on 12 July 2021. They will first stay in Ina City, Nagano Prefecture which is the host city for Timor-Leste athletes for their preparations.
