More than 20.000 torture victims during Indonesian occupation

ecutive Director of Timor-Leste’s Centro National Chega, Hugo Fernandes

DILI, 26 june 2021 (TATOLI) – Based on a report from the Commission for Friendship and Reconciliation (CAVR) it was reported that more than 20,000 victims were occupied by Indonesia during the 24 years when Indonesia colonized Timor-Leste, revealed Director of the National Center for Chega (CNC) Hugo Maria Fernandes.

Therefore, CNC wants to celebrate International torture day on 26 June which has been initiated by the United Nations as International torture day.

“UN has declared june 26 as international torture day because based on human rights wach torture is a bad intention that opposes the freedom of people, the international convention on civil rights and politics also prohibits people from carrying out torture and is also strengthened by the constitution of the Republic Democratic of Timor-Leste (RDTL) and it is written that do not threaten someone’s integrity,” said Hugo to the TATOLI News Agency’s Journalist in Balide on saturday.

Therefore, CNC wants to celebrate this international day with the aim of remembering the international convention law which Timor -Leste has adopted.

He said because Timor Leste has adopted an international convention on torture, we must follow it.

Timor-Leste has also become a member of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, besides that Timor Leste has ratified the convention on civil and political rights therefore we have to follow all the guidelines of international law.

Fernades explained that the declaration of 26 june which was designated as the international torture day and itwas very crucial to be celebrated in Timor Leste in silence for the heroes who had died to fight for Timor Leste for 24 years in the occupation of the Indonesian regime.

However, in this era of independence, many torture victims are not registered, therefore in the future CNC will collect torturation data.

“More than 20.000 victims of torture carried out by the Indonesian regime during its 24 years of colonizing Timor-Leste, but in this era of independence, many torture victims are still living in poverty,” said Fernandes.

CNC will collect all data from torture victims to be submitted to the State and the government to pay attention to their fate.

Many victims of torture have died but we hope that the victims of torture who are still alive will be able to appreciate them through a valuable certification to appreciate their sacrifices.
