DILI, 15 july 2021 (TATOLI) – The Cuban government has awarded scholarships to 1.530 Timorese youth and doctors, informed the Third Secretary of the Cuban Embassy, José Ernesto Díaz Pérez.
Among these young people, 1504 were from the National University of Timor Lorosa’e (UNTL) and studied General Medicine, 26 have taken specialization courses.
“According to data, 1.504 UNTL scholarship recipients are recipients of the Cuban Government scholarship program, Everyone had worked in various institutions, centers and health units across the region”, said José Ernesto Díaz Pérez to TATOLI, News Agency in Farol, Dili on thursday.
In the same place the head of the Cuban Medical Brigade in Timor-Leste, Juan Carlos Chavez Godoy said that more than 20 Timorese had completed their studies in oncology, neurology, gynecology and surgery.
“There are 26 East Timorese studying the specialty of Medicine, 23 of whom have completed their studies and now they have been in Timor-Leste, and the other three should complete their study next year,” said Godoy.
The official added that the Cuban Medical Brigade had not received a scholarship request from Timor-Leste’s Ministry of Health this year.
“We are willing to provide scholarships, but for this year there is no request from the Ministry of Health. Even in a pandemic situation, we will continue to maintain the program, even with reduced vacancies,” he said.
Cooperation bilateral between the Republic of Cuba and Timor-Leste was established in 2003, through a meeting between former Cuban President Fidel Castro and his Timor-Leste counterpart Xanana Gusmão, along with his entourage which included Mari Alkatiri, José Ramos Horta and Rui Maria de Araújo, in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.
