UNW and CRS Held Spotlight on conflict prevention against women and children

DILI, 30 september 2021 (TATOLI)– United Nations Women (UNW) and Catholic Relief Service (CRS), conducted an activity on women and children Conflict prevention.

Country Manager CRS, Yane Tamonob Pinto said that It is important to involve all the existing religions in TL to find the solution in the prevention of the violence against women and children in Timor-Leste.

“Women and Children issue is everyone’s responsibility, and the involvement of all relevant entities is to put forward the moral messages, counseling and advising people following everyone’s beliefs” The Country Manager of CRS informed Tatoli at Fatu Hada, Dili, this Thursday.

At the same place, The United Nations Women Representative, Liliana Amaral said that the initiative on this activity is to support CRS in providing a good mechanism on the conflict prevention issue against women and children: “CRS can define some strategy through different religious groups to help people aware with this issue and contribute for the conflict prevention towards woman and children.

The President of “Pastoral Uma Kain Dioseze Dili,” Sister Guilhermina Marçal said that this is the most important activity that needed to be held. This activity aimed to involve all parties to provide the solution for the conflict against women and children:” from the Catholic side we will provide sufficient information to guide the parents and the youth,”

According to Sister Marcal, the mechanism to avoid the households conflict is to have a greater understanding of the responsibility and the functions as a husband and wife before go in for merry: “They must be well prepared before getting married and they should have to genuinely understand about the responsibility as husband or a wife, this is one mechanism to prevent a family conflict,”

“We suggest to all the young people to avoid getting married at an early age, because this is also part of the issue that contributes to the household violence, “Sister Guilhermina Marcal commented at the conflict prevention seminar today.

She said Catholic Church is providing counseling and advising to lead the people to build a harmonious family and bring the family to achieve a prosperous life.

Following the data report conducted by CRS-MEAL (Monitoring Evaluation Accountability and data Learning) conducted in Three municipalities, shows 23% of family women and 45% of family men have the comprehension on gender issues, 79% of family men have the comprehension on how to have a happy and harmonious family and 70% of community leaders have fully understood the impact of premature marriage.

The report also indicates, 95% of the local community is willing to support Conflict prevention towards women and children, 79%

“HAPARA” program is designed by CRS and funded by European Union (EU) through United Nations Women (UNW) for the amount of 90.000 USD.

The program is one year program and will be implemented in other municipalities including Liquica, Viqueque, and Bobonaro (Malian).
