DILI, 18 october 2021 (TATOLI) – The Chief Unit of the National Blood Bank (NBB) of the Guido Valadares, Janauario da Cruz Freitas, informed that NBB currently has enough blood available to respond to those patients who need blood transfusions.
“At the moment, we have more than 200 bags of blood, which is enough to respond to those who require blood transfusions,” Freitas told TATOLI, in HNGV, Dili on Friday.
So far, NBB had been collected blood from various institutions and organizations in Timor-Leste.
“We have been collected blood from the National Institute of Health (NIH), Unital University, Muslim Community, Protestant Community, Timorese National Defense Force (F-FDTL), National University of Timor-Leste (UNTL), UNDIL University, Cristal Institute, Federal Insurance, etc,” he said.
Freitas said in Timor-Leste, the rarest blood type is AB, adding it is difficult to get this blood type.
“During the state of the emergency, sanitary fence, and mandatory confinement, there was not enough blood at the NBB’s stock. So, the family members are the main sources of the blood donation to support their loved ones who need blood transfusions,” he said.
He said according to the agreement signed by NIH and NBB previously, NIH would donate blood to NBB every three months.
On friday (15/10), NBB collected a total of 103 bags of blood from the National Institute of Health (NIH).
He said every month more than 200 patients need blood transfusions, adding NBB not only provides blood to HNGV, but also the referral hospitals, Bairo Pite Clinic, and Fatumeta Maternity Hospital.
