NP congratulates Timor-Leste on being recognized by UNESCO for its Tais Timor as a world heritage

DILI, 15 december 2021 (TATOLI) – The National Parliament of Timor – Leste ( NP) congratulates Timor-Leste on being recognized by UNESCO for its Tais Timor as a world heritage.

“This is an extraordinary recognition, consequently the Government of Timor-Leste congratulates all citizens who have participated in this effort”, the Minister for the Presidency of the Council of Ministers, Fidélis Magalhães, told the media during a press conference at the Government Palace, Dili.

Magalhães also informed that the UNESCO team in Timor-Leste provided its support, as well as the state entity so that the country can achieve this recognition.

The Vice President of the National Parliament, Maria Angelina Sarmento, on behalf of the Representative in the PN, also congratulated the country on the recognition of Tais as a world heritage site.

“I congratulate the people of Timor-Leste, our female tais waver. I also greet UNESCO and the team from the State Secretariat for Art and Culture (SEAC) of the Ministry of Higher Education, Science and Culture,” She said.

Angelina recalls that Tais Timor-Leste registration process began in 2016, through a study conducted by UNESCO experts, in collaboration with SEAC.

The chairman of the PLP Party requested that Timorese women continue to produce quality Tais to attract the international market.

The Executive Secretary of the Timor-Leste National Commission for UNESCO in Timor-Leste, Francisco Barreto said that the official recognition of Tais Timor was carried out on December 14, 2021, at around 13.00 Paris time, at 23.00 WIB in Timor Leste.

Barreto also reminded that UNESCO and the Government prepared, in 2019, video and photo documentation about Tais, which they sent, on March 16, 2020, to UNESCO, so that it can be recognized as an Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.
