DILI, 24 february 2022 (TATOLI) – The Institute for the Defense of Children’s Rights (INDDICA) urges political parties not to mobilize children to participate in electoral campaign actions .

“Political parties should not mobilize children to be present in campaign actions. The same is true of teachers. They should not authorize students to participate in these actions, except students over 17 years old”, said INDDICA Director Dinorah Granadeiro to journalists at a press conference in Caicoli, Dili.

The director also appealed to the National Police of Timor-Leste (PNTL) to guarantee control and surveillance during campaign actions to prevent possible disturbances and, in this way, ensure the stability of the entire electoral process.

INDDICA also asked parents to fulfill their duty of care for their children during the electoral campaign.

For the official, civil society and religious denominations play a decisive role in disseminating information regarding the prohibition of children’s participation in campaign actions.

On the other hand, the director asked the media to cover the matter in a responsible and critical way.

It is recalled that Article 18(1) of the Timorese Constitution provides that the child has the right to special protection by the family, the community and the State, particularly against all forms of abandonment, discrimination, violence, oppression, sexual abuse and exploitation.

Paragraph 2) of the same article also indicates that every child enjoys all the rights that are universally recognized, as well as all those enshrined in international conventions regularly ratified or approved by the State.

According to STAE data, the election campaign takes place between the 2nd and 16th of march.
