Club de Madrid: Congratulations to Ramos Horta on landslide victory

DILI, 23 april 2022 (TATOLI) – The Club de Madrid congratulated the Nobel prize winner José Ramos-Horta after scoring a landslide victory in Timor-Leste 2022 presidential election, on april 19, saying it will be a privilege to have Him at the helm of his country once again.

“Allow us to start by extending our warmest congratulations and those of our fellow Club de Madrid and Secretariat staff on your resounding victory as the President of Timor-Leste for a second term. The devastating social, human, and economic consequences that the COVID-19 pandemic has wrought upon our societies, aggravated and compounded by the horrific war in Ukraine have evidenced the fragility and risk that surround us. The task before you is daunting and your commitment to democracy, social justice, and peace, as well as to restoring trust in global cooperation and solidarity will be crucial to the development of Timor-Leste,” Danilo Türk, President of the Club de Madrid, said in a statement released on friday.

“It will be a privilege to have you at the helm of your country once again and we wish you and your team all the success, confident that your experience, dedication, and determination will help the people of Timor-Leste better navigate the perilous road ahead and build back a better, stronger and more inclusive democratic system.”

Türk stressed that global cooperation, a rules-based multilateral system, and democracy require constant nurturing and vigilance, particularly if no one is to be left behind: “These are values to which we are all deeply committed and, as President and Secretary-General Club de Madrid, we reiterate our utmost support to your efforts.”

“We have both had the honor to work with you in your different capacities as the President of Timor-Leste (2007-2012), Member of the Club de Madrid, and Board member of Club de Madrid, and in this next chapter of your political career, our organization will continue working in partnership and the pursuit of stronger democracy,” he said.

“We send you our best wishes in this new chapter of your life-long commitment to Timor-Leste and its people and look forward to discussing how Club de Madrid and its Members can support you as you take on the formidable responsibility of leading your country once again and in time of unprecedented uncertainty.”
