DILI, 02 june 2022 (TATOLI) – The World Health Organization (WHO) and the Government of Timor-Leste’s Ministry of Health (MoH) ensure that the vaccine for cancer or Human Papilloma Virus (HPV) vaccine will be available by 2023.
The vaccine against cervical cancer will be aimed at children aged 11 years and over. It was done to prevent HPV disease in Timor-Leste.
“In the first quarter of 2023, we will launch a cervical cancer vaccine for girls over 11 years old. I urge all women over 35 to get screened for cervical cancer,” said WHO Representative in Timor-Leste, Arvind Mathur.
According to Arvind Mathur WHO will continue to support the Ministry of Health and the people of Timor-Leste to eliminate cervical cancer as a public health problem.
He also emphasized that, according to WHO estimation, Timor-Leste records ten cases of cervical cancer for every 100,000 women annually. The mortality rate is 60%, which indicates that about six diagnosed cases are at an advanced stage.
