UN provided US$70 million for Timor-Leste to support the economic recovery and achieve SDG 2030

Roy Trivedy

DILI, 10 june 2022 (TATOLI)- In line with helping the Timor-Leste economy recover and achieve sustainable development goals (SDG) 2030, the United Nations (UN) has provided a financial fund of 70 USD million for UN programs, linked to the TL Government program to achieve sustainable outputs.

The United Nations Representative in Timor-Leste, Roy Trivedy told Tatoli at the Timor-Leste Development Partners Meeting (TLDPM), held at the Ministry of Finance, in Dili, today.

“The United Nations recognizes that Covid-19 and the war conflict in Ukraine greatly affected economic development throughout the world, particularly in Timor-Leste. The consequence is that all government programs have not achieved good results and Timor-Leste’s economy is running very slowly,” Trivedy said.

Trivedy stressed that 70 million USD is focused on all United Nations programs, especially on climate change disasters, Economic recovery, Health, education, democratic systems, good governance, and others: “These programs are adapted to government programs that need to be improved, to ensure sustainable outcomes for people’s lives.”

At the same time, Trivedy is also concerned about the catastrophic risks of climate change and recommends every citizen to do more about climate change: “At this extraordinary meeting we talked a lot about climate change on the largest scale of adaptation and none of us is nothing doing enough,”

“Governments and partners will focus on what are the risks of climate change, how we prepare communities and systems to deal with climate issues, and the growing syllabus on impacts that hit all countries in the world,”

To address such problems, Trivedy said, the UN’s role is to provide the best quality advice; also provided some technical support by recruiting several experts to help the government focus effectively on program implementation.

Besides, The United Nations had also monitored the amount of food affected by the world crisis including COVID-19 and the war in Ukraine to be notified to the government.

At the Timor-Leste Development Partners (TLDPM) meeting, all Government entities, and development partners, Civil Society have discussed the Great Options of the Plan approved by the National Parliament that outlined two hundred and sixty-three (263) initiatives that can contribute decisively to enhancing the beneficial effects of the twenty-eight (28) national outcomes that the Government intends to achieve through sixteen (16) strategic areas.

Trivedy assessed that the plan provided an answer to the problems faced by Timor-Leste and brought good preparation for the government’s achievements.
