UNICEF provides electronic education equipment to the AoVITL
DILI, 27 june 2022 (TATOLI)- The United Nations Children Fund (UNICEF) provides education materials to the Association of the Vision Impairment in Timor-Leste ( AoVITL) to be used during the learning process.
UNICEF Representative in Timor-Leste, Bilal Durrani said UNICEF is an organization of the United Nations that is committed to helping vulnerable children who cannot access education, especially vulnerable and disabled children.
“This is the most important and useful educational tool to make available to the Association of the Blind in Timor-Leste that will be used to improve the teaching-learning process in Timor-Leste,” UNICEF representative in Timor-Leste, Bilal Durrani told reporters in Manleuana on Monday. this.
The equipment item comprises an electronic recorder; typewriter, braille machine, braille paper, EVOE10 portable digital talk book player, watch lectures, and include software that children can use to assist them during the teaching and learning process.
According to Durrani Children have the same right to access education, but in Timor-Leste, most children with disabilities face challenges in school, therefore UNICEF is committed to working with the Government to ensure children with disabilities can have the opportunity to access inclusive education.
Durani added, that due to the lack of teachers to teach inclusive education, in 2021 UNICEF offered to increase the capacity of inclusive teachers in three municipalities consisting of Liquica Ermera and Bobonaro to improve education for people with disabilities.
At the same place, Minister of Education, Youth and Sports (MoEYS), Armindo Maia appreciated the support of partners in providing educational equipment for the blind community, saying the materials were useful for organizations to develop their knowledge and skills.
“With this material support, the Ministry of Education promises to provide quality inclusive education to all its members,”
The Director of AHDMTL, Gabriel de Sousa is very pleased with the support from UNICEF including educational materials and the building of two men’s toilets.
“I express my deepest appreciation to UNICEF for the support given to this association,” he said.
Since Timor-Leste has recorded over 380,000 people with disabilities in the country including 14,000 people with visual impairments, Sousa asked the government through the Ministry of Education and the Ministry of Social Solidarity and Inclusion to provide sufficient financial support to respond to inclusive education.
“This association exists with the main objective of promoting and protecting all people who live their lives with disabilities, therefore this association will work with the Ministry of Education and the Government’s Social Solidarity and Inclusion to help people with disabilities access inclusive education and access job opportunities,” he concluded.
