DILI, 02 august 2022 (TATOLI)– The President of the 2022 Census Technical Commission and the Director General of Statistics, Elias dos Santos Fereira said the Ministry of Finance through the Central Statistics Agency has recruited more than 2700 Timorese to conduct the 2022 Population Census in Timor-Leste.

“To address the 2022 census the National Statistics has recruited more than 2,700 Timorese to complete the work in one month from September 04 to October 5, 2022,” President of the Technical Commission for the 2022 Census and General Director of Statistics, Elias dos Santos Fereira, told TATOLI in Cai-Coli, Dili on Tuesday.

The 2700 staff will be selected to do different jobs related to data collection for the 2022 census including 2045 will be interviewers, 623 will be technical supervisors and 36 will be publication staff.

“These staff will attend the training on the methods used to collect data including geographic, demographic, and economic data, to identify the needs of the population and submit it to the government to design a national development plan based on the data collection,” he said.

The Population Census aims to identify the total population in a country, saying, therefore, the data collected will help the government of Timor-Leste, to make political decisions and development based on the needs of the people of that country.

The population census in Timor-Leste was carried out in 2004, 2010, and 2015 while for the years 2016 to 2022 it will be implemented from September 4 to October 5, 2022, in Timor Leste.

A population census is an official count of the population in the territory of a country and the collection of information on selected demographic and socioeconomic characteristics of the population. Almost all countries carry out a population census at least once every 5-10 years, often in conjunction with a housing census, which is an official count of housing stock and a collection of housing characteristics.
