MSSI: Gov’t plans to cover persons with disabilities in all programs and project

DILI, 26 august 2022 (TATOLI)- Director of the National Department for the Rights and Promotion of Persons with Disabilities, Mateus Da Silva said Government’s relevant Ministry, plans to cover persons with disabilities in all programs and projects.

Consistent with the Government’s national action plan which includes all persons with disabilities in national development, MSSI observes that currently there has been some progress for persons with disabilities in accessibility to public places.

“The accessibility program for persons with disabilities in Timor-Leste has reached 50%, this percentage refers to the construction of ramps and lifts in several areas in Dili,” the Director, Mateus Da Silva told TATOLI, this Friday.

Silva said the government would provide flyovers in several areas including traffic signs in areas that are mostly accessible to people with disabilities, including the road in front of the Ministry of Solidarity and Social Inclusion (MSSI), the road close to the office of the Association of People with Disability in TL (ADTL).

“The construction project plan has been designed and will be implemented in 2022, this year,”

In addition, MSSI ensures that persons with disabilities also have the right to access any program or education saying therefore currently, the Minister of Higher Education, Science, and Culture (MoHESC) through Lorosa’e University (UNTL) has established a department of social inclusion to ensure that students with disabilities can access the University: “Currently 50 disabled students are studying at UNTL,”

Director Silva added, that through the support of the State Secretariat of Youth and Sports (SoSYS), people with disabilities also participate in national and international sports competitions.

Meanwhile, for the processing of documents for persons with disabilities, the Ministry of Transportation has coordinated with the Ministry of Transportation and Communication (MoTC) and the Ministry of Justice (MoJ) to provide special treatment for persons with disabilities in processing documents such as driving licenses, Nationality Certification, Passport, and other certifications.

To respond to the needs of persons with disabilities in Timor-Leste, In 2022, MSSI has approved USD 160,000 for the Department for the Promotion of the Rights for Persons with Disabilities, to be used to respond to all the inclusive programs.
