President Horta meets with Timorese community in Darwin

DARWIN, 05 september 2022 – President of Republic, José Ramos-Horta this Monday, met with the Timorese community who are involved in the Portuguese & Timorese Social Club in Darwin, Australia.

“I will not be going to just pass by, I stop by here (Darwin), assembling the Timorese people living here, Chinese Timorese, Portuguese Timorese, and many more. These are the treasure of Timor,” said President Horta.

The Head of State asked the young Timorese to spread the official languages: Portuguese and Tétum, following the Constitution of RDTL, article 13, to also recognize English and Indonesian as working languages.

Henrique Yap, a representative from the Timorese community in Darwin wanted to return to Timor to do business.

“We want to return to Timor to start a business. We can interact, and we can help each other. There are many Timorese coming to Australia for work. When we have interactions like this, Timor will have a good future,” said Henrique Yap.

President Horta guaranteed that this state visit will reinforce the relationship between Timor-Leste and Australia, and to further explore the cooperation in economic development, security and defense, education, labor mobility, and regional initiative.

This state visit to Australia is based on the invitation from Australia’s General Governor, Han David Hurley.
