Government extends 2022 census to october 27

DILI, 19, otctober 2022 (TATOLI) – The Government of Timor-Leste extends the 2022 Census until october 27 to complete household data collection in several municipalities, including Baucau, Bobonaro, Ermera and Dili.

“The 2022 Census was scheduled to end on october 5. However, the data of many households in several municipalities have not yet been collected by our technical teams. Therefore, the government has decided to extend the census by another 10 days, from 17 to 27 october 2022,” National Director of Statistics of the Ministry of Finance (MoF), Elias Ferreira announced the extension date, in Dili, on tuesday.

He said that the government has formed a task force team to continue conducting household data collection: “Many households in the municipalities of Baucau, Bobonaro, Ermera, and Dili have not yet been collected. For example, in Dili, data collection is still ongoing in the villages of Madohi, Fatuhada, Comoro, and Vila-Verde.”

Ferreira said that the 2022 census has already been completed in five municipalities – RAEOA, Atauro, Aileu, Manufahi, and Covalima.

“The preliminary result of the 2022 census is likely to be published in november. Thus, the data can be used by parliaments during the 2023 State Budget debate in the National Parliament,” he said.

Daily Progress Report of 2022 Census

According to the Daily Progress Report, as of tuesday (18/10), 1,329,806 of the population have been registered, of which 677,190 are men and 652,560 are women. This includes foreign visitors living in Timor-Leste and 18,126 Timorese currently residing overseas: “So far, we have registered 242,712 households. In the capital Dili alone, we have registered over 300,000 inhabitants.”

“I call on communities who haven’t taken part in the 2022 census to contact your local authorities to collect your data,” Ferreira said.
