The government intends to increase the labor market demand

DILI, 7 november 2022 (TATOLI) – The government of Timor-Leste will approve the 2017-2030 National Employment Strategy for a smooth implementation aim of increasing labor market demand and increasing job offers.

Speaking during the state budget debate, Prime Minister Taur Matan Ruak revealed that the executive intends to create jobs for the unemployed, by providing incentives to entrepreneurs, as well as to improve the qualifications of workers, especially the younger ones, to increase their competitiveness in the international labor market work.

According to the head of the Government, Timor-Leste is a country that is mostly composed of young people, saying in 2021, only 4.3% of the population was over the age of 64.

“The need for special attention to youth is increasingly strategic when Timor’s young population is expected to continue to grow rapidly in the years to come”, Taur Matan Ruak said, in the 2023 state budget debate in the national parliament.

Matan Ruak said that creating more jobs in the formal sector “is necessary to require the new policy, law, program, and activity. The government must also go hand in hand with civil society and the private sector.”

“We must develop mechanisms to combat precarious work, by monitoring employers and ensuring the implementation of labor laws and social protection mechanisms. The government also wants to encourage cooperative, associative, and clean-up movements, to ensure public participation and combat social and economic inequality,” he stressed.

According to data from the Secretary of State for Vocational Training and Employment, about six thousand registered people are in a position to be involved in the job market.
