TL’s copyright law is prepared to be submitted to the President for its promulgation

DILI, 29 november 2022 (TATOLI) – The National Parliament approved Timor-Leste’s Copyright Law and other related Rights Code with 48 votes in favor, zero against, and one abstention.

The President of the National Parliament, Aniceto Guterres asked the Parliamentary Committee G for Education, Youth, Culture, and Citizenship to make some corrections to some parts of the law before presenting it to the President of the Republic for its promulgation.

Parliamentary Committee G, António Verdial said that the Copyright Law and other Related Rights Codes aim not only to protect the rights of the owner but also to manage other related rights.

“The copyright law would come into force 180 days after its promulgation and publication,” Verdial said.

FRETILIN MP Joaquim dos Santos said after its promulgation, the Government should put the law into practice. 

The Minister of Higher Education, Science, and Culture (MoHESC), Longuinhos dos Santos congratulated the National Parliament on the approval of the law. 

“The approval of this law will definitely promote the development of culture, art, literature, and science in the country,” Santos said.

He said the Government is committed to promoting and raising public awareness of the Copyright Law and Related Rights Code. 

The Copyright Law consists of 224 articles to be submitted to the Head of State for approval, intending to protect and guarantee the creation, production, and commercialization of literary, scientific, and artistic works, as well as protecting copyrights.

On 20 june 2022, the PN generally approved the creation of the Copyright Law.
