DILI, 10 january 2023 (TATOLI) – The Japanese government and the government of Timor-Leste discussed cooperation on the Internship Training Program (ITP) to bring Timorese youth to learn and work in Japan.

The five Timorese would be recruited by the Kochi Prefectural Government Department of Commerce, Industry, and Labor of Japan through the Internship Training Program.

The Japanese Ambassador in Timor-Leste, Kimura Tetsuya, said that the program aims to invite young Timorese to Japan to work in companies, for example, in the agriculture sector, by receiving a salary while gaining knowledge and experience.

He said that the negotiation of the memorandum of contract (MoC) would be carried out in the very near future, which would be the framework to increase the number of young Timorese trainees in Japan: “We will start with a pilot program, taking a small number of young Timorese to train under this internship program.”

“We will work together with the Secretary of State for Vocational Training and Employment (SEFOPE) on the details of the ITP and hope to be able to finalize the agreement in the near future to start the program,” Kimura explained after having a meeting with President Horta at the President’s Palace, in Dili, today.

He said during the meeting, he briefed President Horta on the cooperation, saying that the Head of State was very supportive of the internship training program.

“We hope to be able to further develop this cooperation in the future to contribute to Japanese society as well as to the development of Timor-Leste,” he hoped.

Ambassador Kimura said the selection committee had interviewed the five candidates who had already learned the Japanese language.

“Again, we would like to cooperate with SEFOPE to create a good environment so that we can increase the number of interns in the future,” he concluded.
