DILI, 23 january 2023 ( TATOLI)– The Educational Scientific and Cultural Organization ( UNESCO) dedicated this year’s International Day of Education to girls and women who have lost access to education.
“UNESCO wishes to dedicate the fifth edition of this International Day of Education to all ‘ s girls in Afghanistan who have been denied their right to study. The organization condemns this serious attack on human dignity and the basic right to education,” UNESCO’s official Website highlighted.
Education is a human right, a public good, and a public responsibility. The United Nations General Assembly proclaims 24 january as International Education Day and celebrates the role of education in peace and development.
Without inclusive and equal quality education and lifelong opportunities, all countries will not be able to achieve gender equality and break the cycle of poverty that keeps millions of children, youth, and adults left behind.
“Currently 224 million children and youth are out of school and 771 million adults are illiterate. Their right to education is violated and unacceptable, it’s time to change education,” it says.
The fifth International Day of Education will be observed on 24 january 2023 with the theme ‘Invest in People, Prioritizing Education’.
This year will call for maintaining strong political mobilization around education and charting ways to translate global commitments and initiatives into action.
Education must prioritize accelerating progress toward all of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) against the backdrop of the global recession, rising inequality, and the climate crisis.
” It will also highlight the most challenging crises of our time in Afghanistan when girls and women are being deprived of their basic right to education. Since the practical changes in Kabul in August 2021 access to education beyond the primary level has been suspended indefinitely for all Afghan girls over the age of twelve.”
