Govt approves one new administrative post in Liquiça and three in Baucau

DILI, 15 march 2023 (TATOLI) – The Government, today, approved the third amendment to the administrative divisions of the territory to create one new administrative post in Liquiça municipality called Loes and three in Baucau municipality namely Quelicai, Quelicai Antiga, and Matebian. 

The draft law was presented by the Minister of State Administration, Miguel Pereira de Carvalho. 

Minister of the Presidency of the Council of Ministers, Fidelis Manuel Leite Magalhães said that the first change takes place in the current administrative post of Maubara, in the Municipality of Liquiça, which has an area of approximately 264 km2 (48.7%) of the municipality’s territory, and a population of approximately 22,000 people: “Thus, this administrative post is divided in two: Maubara, which has an area of 132 km2 and 12,194 inhabitants; and Loes, which has an area of 132 Km2 and a population of approximately 9,700 people.”

Meanwhile, the second change takes place in the current administrative post of Quelicai, in the Municipality of Baucau, which has an area of approximately 206 km2 (13.7%) of the territory of the municipality and a population of approximately 17,471 people. 

“Thus, Quelicai is divided into three administrative posts: Quelicai which has an area of 46 km2 and 7.096 inhabitants; Quelicai-Antiga has an area of 80 Km2 and an approximate population of 5.998 people; and Matebian with an area of 80 Km2 and about 4.300 inhabitants.

Considering that an election process for the National Parliament is underway and to allow the current and next Governments to plan and execute the necessary measures for the establishment and entry into operation of the new administrative post administrations and their respective bodies, this Draft Law shall come into force on january 1, 2024.

At the same place, Minister Pereira also presented the possibility of the creation of 10 new villages in the country.
