DILI, 11 april 2023 (TATOLI)—The National Commissioner of Customs Authority, José Antonio Fatima Abilio said that Customs needs a mini-laboratory, to conduct the test for export and import products to ensure the quality of food safety and ensure public health in Timor – Leste.

“We need a mini-laboratory, to conduct the first testing of the imports and exports goods, before being consumed by the public to ensure the public health in Timor – Leste,” the Commissioner of Customs, José Abilio told reporters, in his office, Colmera Dili, on tuesday.

He added that currently Timor- Leste has one laboratory test but it is only owned by the Ministry of Health, therefore Customs Services faces difficulties in the checklist of import and export goods, saying during this time Customs Authority checks the goods manually.

He highlighted the laboratory must obtain accreditation, by having an international certificate to guarantee the results of products.

The Commissioner of Customs explained in detail that, the laboratory will support the test of Timor – Leste’s original products, for exporting abroad, because these products must have a certificate with the test results from the laboratory, to ensure Timor – Leste’s original product is overseas.

“We have asked the support from Indonesia, and Australia to analyze our products, before exporting the original products of Timor – Leste because at the moment we do not have the laboratory test,” he said.

He also said that the food testing laboratory is important because it is one part that contributed to TL’s accession to become the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) and the World Trade Organization (WTO).
