DILI, 12 april 2023 (TATOLI) – The government of Timor-Leste approved a resolution on Timor-Leste National Ocean Policy, presented by the Minister of Agriculture and Fisheries (MoAF), Pedro dos Reis.

National Ocean Policy (NOP) was important for the government of Timor-Leste to improve the nation’s direction of future ocean use and management.

“The aim of the National Ocean Policy (NOP) is to provide a clear strategic direction for all relevant organizations in this field, to contribute in an integrated manner to addressing ocean-related issues and planning and managing future ocean use for the benefits of current and future generations. It will contribute to the sustainable development and growth of the blue economy and to the Sustainable Development Goals,” Minister of the Presidency of the Council of Ministers, Fidelis Manuel Leite Magalhães said in a press conference, at the Palace of President, in Dili, today.

The NOP will contribute to the implementation government’s plan to achieve the goal of protecting 30% of land and oceans by 2030.

Previously, Mario Cabral, a researcher at the Department of the Fisheries and Marine Science of the Lorosa’e National University (UNTL) said that NOP will “ensure the protection of ocean health, coastal ecosystems, and resources, improve the sustainability of the ocean and coastal economies, and preserve Timor-Leste’s biodiversity.

“The vision of our National Ocean Policy is to ensure a healthy and secure ocean that sustains the livelihoods and prosperity of the people of Timor-Leste fairly and equitably,” Cabral said.

NOP will support the implementation of sustainable development goal 14: ‘Conserve and sustainably use the oceans, seas and marine resources for sustainable development’.

Therefore, Government, through MoAF, has a key role in finding common solutions to key challenges and ensuring that the Nation’s valuable ocean and coastal resources continue to provide wealth and benefit for the Timorese people.
