Horta awards an honorable Medal of Merit for Bernard Collaery

DILI, 19 may 2023 (TATOTLI)- President Horta awarded an honorable Medal to Bernard Collaery for his long-standing dedication to fight for Timorese sovereignty.

“The state of Timor-Leste should thanks and give appreciation to the Australian lawyer Bernard Collaery. For his dedication to defending Timor-Leste maritime boundary in Timor sea,’’ President of Republic, José Ramos Horta said in his remarks, at the President Palace, Lahane, this Friday.

Bernard Collaery has been assisting Timor-Leste’s struggle for independence and also fighting for the country’s sovereignty.

He is an Australian citizen who fully dedicated half of his life to Timor-Leste. He has very much fighting spirits to valuable Timorese sacrifice of body and blood.

“We should recognize many foreign friends from different countries such as Australia and Portugal as well. They are contributing much greatest dedication to supporting Timorese people in many different ways,’’ He said

Bernard Collaery in turn said it is a great honor to be awarded a Medal of Merit from President José Ramos Horta.

“I am here honored for Timorese people and I am here nothing more just for the people I love. Your country is in my blood so I am a friend of your country,’’ He said

Bernard learn about Timor-Leste when he was 22 years old. Bernard is turning 78 years old and committed to spending the rest of his whole life helping Timorese people.

The Medal of Merit was created, through Decree-Law No. 15/2009 of March 18, to recognize and thank the national and international people who served Timor-Leste, in favor of strengthening the social order and whose actions were emotionally significant for national peace and stability.

In addition, Horta also awarded 108 national and international who are giving their contribution and dedication to Timor-Leste.

The 108 people were honored with different types of medals, Medal of the Order of Timor-Leste, Collar Grade Medal, Medal Grade, Insigna Grade Medal, and Medal of Merit, including Certificate of Recognition of Various National and Foreign Individuals who played roles for the benefit of the Timorese during the process of national development.

So far, 16 people were awarded the Collar Grade Medal, 42 persons were awarded the Decoration Medal, and 13 persons grant the medal of merit, including two persons who were awarded the certification of appreciation from the country.
