Portugal and Timor-Leste Foreign Ministers discuss Timor-Leste’s accession to ASEAN

DILI, 26 july 2023 (TATOLI)-Timor-Leste’s Minister of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation, Bendito Freitas and Portugal’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, João Gomes Cravinho discussed Portugal’s Timor-Leste’s association with the Southeast Asian Membership(ASEAN).

“This morning I met with the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Portugal and we discussed various fields such as education, economic investment, and other important fields for the future, especially how to connect Timor- Leste’s economy with Indonesian and European countries after the country becomes a full member of ASEAN,” explained Bendito Freitas at the Hotel Timor.

Freitas revealed that Portugal was willing to provide support to Timor-Leste in various fields to accelerate the accession process to ASEAN.

“Another thing to note was that there are many requirements that must be addressed and if necessary Portugal can support us to answer the needed requirement,” he said.

The meeting also discussed the labor mobility program and how Timor-Leste monitors the young people before traveling to look for a job in a European country, especially in Portugal, saying they should at least attend the training before leaving Timor-Leste for another country.

In addition, workers must have professional competence and good Portuguese language skills:” So, this will help them have sufficient basic knowledge to better adapt to work situations and environments,” Freitas said.

The meeting between the two diplomats took place this morning at the Timor Hotel for approximately 40 minutes, attended by the Portuguese Ambassador in Timor-Leste Manuela Bairos, the Ambassador of Timor-Leste in Portugal, Isabel Amaral Guterres.
