DILI, 1 september 2023 (TATOLI) – Timor-Leste’s Executive Director of PERMATIL, Eugénio Lemos is nominated to be awarded the 2023 International Food Security award by the Ramon Magsaysay Foundation Philippines.

Executive Director of the PERMATL Non-Governmental Organization of Timor-Leste, Eugénio Lemos, is one of the winners of the 2023 Ramon Magsaysay award in the food sovereignty category.

Speaking to Tatoli, Eugénio Lemos said the announcement was a “surprise” when he learned that he was included in the nomination to receive the award, According to the agenda, the official award ceremony will take place on November 11 this year in the Philippines.

“I don’t know, but in April a team from the Philippines interviewed me about the work carried out by PERMATIL, in particular on school gardens and water conservation. Yesterday afternoon, they (from the Philippines) contacted me to send me a photo, and I started to find out that I was one of the winners of the prize”, he told Tatoli, in Farol Dili.

He added that the award is recognition of the service promoted by PERMATIL and hopes that in the future it will collaborate with the Government to help people have access to food and contribute to the reduction of malnutrition in Timor-Leste.

“We will continue to fulfill this mission of helping people’s food security, as we know that the basis of food sovereignty is access to water, seeds, and soil to grow products”, he said.

The President of the Ramon Magsaysay Prize Foundation, Aurelio Montinola, in his speech, described Eugénio Lemos as a visionary of food sovereignty who promotes local and sustainable food security.

This year’s Ramon Magsaysay Award was awarded to four people in different categories: in the health category awarded to Ravi Kannan R. from India, Pioneering Women in Peacebuilding, awarded to Miriam Coronel-Ferrer, from the Philippines), in the education category Korvi Rakshand (Bangladesh) and, in Food Sovereignty attributed to Eugénio Lemos.

Currently, Permatil has implemented school garden programs in 254 educational establishments and managed 60 water conservation centers throughout the territory, having benefited around 500 communities.

It is known that The Ramon Magsaysay Award, Asia’s premier award and highest distinction recognizes the nobility of spirit demonstrated in humanitarian service to the people of the region.
