DILI, 05 march 2024 (TATOLI) – The National University of Timor-Lorosa’e (UNTL), in partnership with the University of Coimbra (UC) in Portugal, has selected 50 students to study Master of Law.

The Vice-Rector of the Postgraduate and Research Program at UNTL, Afonso de Almeida, believes that this partnership contributes significantly to the reform of the justice sector in the country, as well as promoting respect for human rights, equality, and the development of a more prosperous, equitable and peaceful society.

“It’s very important for us to cooperate with Portugal because most of our laws are written in Portuguese,” Almeida told Tatoli, in Dili.

He said almost all the subjects will be taught remotely because most teachers are from the UC.

The Rector of UNTL, João Martins, said that the partnership aims to meet the expectations of the Timorese community in terms of transforming legal education in Timor-Leste, saying therefore UNTL is committed to preparing qualified professionals who are committed to contributing to the country’s socio-economic and cultural progress.

“This course aims to offer high-quality legal education that meets both the advanced training needs of jurists interested in pursuing academic careers and the needs of those seeking a better understanding of Timorese law in order to perform duties as legal advisors, lawyers or magistrates,” he said.

João Monteiro, a lecturer at the UC Faculty of Law, said he is available to contribute to the success of the Master of Laws course and to the development of Timorese legal science.
