Zacarias Albano promotion and dissemination of the Portuguese language in the country

DILI, 13 march 2024 (TATOLI) – The Executive Secretary of the Community of Portuguese-Speaking Countries (CPLP), Zacarias Albano da Costa, was in Timor-Leste on an official visit to meet members of the government and visit public institutions.

After having a meeting with the President of the National Parliament, Fernanda Lay, Zacarias Albano revealed that he was very pleased because the promotion and dissemination of the Portuguese language in the country is remarkable.

“I’m very pleased as Portuguese was spoken at the meeting of the Council of Ministers. I see government officials speaking in Portuguese, I see students, I see the magnificent rectors of the University of Dili and the National University of Timor Lorosa’e (UNTL) communicating in this language. This proves that Portuguese is growing in our country,” he said.

Costa urged all Timorese to make an effort to learn and speak Portuguese: “The Tetum language has absorbed many words from Portuguese, saying therefore it’s important to learn the language.”

On a visit to the CAFE school in Dili, Zacarias Albano da Costa, the Minister of Education, Dulce de Jesus Soares, the Portuguese Ambassador in Dili, Manuela Bairos and the General Coordinators of the CAFE Project, Lina Vicente and Rojer Soares unveiled the plaque for the CPLP Friendly Schools Network.

After several presentations by students from the school, Zacarias Albano praised the CAFE Project and all the work done to promote and disseminate the Portuguese language.
