DILI, 24 april 2024 (TATOLI) – President of the Republic, Jose Ramos Horta, together with leaders from other Portuguese-speaking nations, attended a celebration organized by the Ismaili Imamat at its global headquarters in Lisbon on Wednesday.

The event marked the 50th anniversary of the Carnation Revolution that brought freedom to Portugal and its Portuguese colonial nations.

President Horta was welcomed by Prince Rahim and Prince Aly Muhammad at the Diwan, the seat of the Ismaili Muslim community.

During the celebration, Nazim Ahmad, the Imamat’s Diplomatic Representative, spoke about the work of the Aga Khan Development Network promoting pluralism and socio-economic development worldwide.

In his remarks, President Horta expressed his gratitude for the emphasis on peace and multilateralism represented by the Ismaili Imamat’s global philanthropic efforts.

Meanwhile, President Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa said that the Imamat “is an example of building peace and multilateralism in the world.”

The celebration further strengthened the relationship between the Ismaili Muslim community and the Lusophone world, connections that date back to when Ismaili immigrants settled in post-revolution Portugal.

As Timor-Leste and Portugal mark 20 years of bilateral relations, President Horta’s presence underscored the cultural and economic partnerships spanning these communities globally.
