DILI, 22 may 2024 (TATOLI) – President of the Republic, Jose Ramos Horta, presided over the swearing-in ceremony for Timor-Leste’s new Ambassadors to Malaysia and Vietnam, at the Nicolau Lobato President Palace.

Lisualdo Gaspar, a diplomat with over 20 years of experience, took the oath as Ambassador to Malaysia. Meanwhile, João Pereira, a former advisor to the President of the Republic, on international relations and previously with extensive experience working with the United Nations and the Government in Timor-Leste, was appointed as Ambassador to Vietnam.

At the swearing ceremony, the Head of State spoke about the strong friendly relations between Timor-Leste and these two nations built on mutual respect since independence in 2002.

Horta appreciated Malaysia’s strong support, including peacekeeping efforts and hosting Timor-Leste’s first diplomatic mission.

While cooperation agreements exist with Vietnam, he noted ongoing discussions on air services, investment, and food security agreements.

Horta also expressed his confidence in the new ambassadors to well represent Timor-Leste’s interests and further strengthen ties with these key regional partners.

He wished the new ambassadors success in strengthening relations abroad.
