Horta speaks to local journalists on Timor-Leste’s priorities

DILI, 07 june 2024 (TATOLI) – The President of the Republic, Jose Ramos Horta held a meeting with journalists assigned to the Presidential Palace, to explain Timor-Leste’s key priorities and positions to these national journalists.

A major focus was Timor-Leste’s accession process to join ASEAN in 2025.

Horta said that while the Ministry of Foreign Affairs coordinates this effort, the decision requires national consensus through the Council of Ministers and the Presidency.

He further spoke about the accelerated preparations to communicate Timor-Leste’s readiness to ASEAN leaders.

On international issues, the President of Timor-Leste said they will stake firm positions at the UN after consulting with the government, including on the South China Sea dispute which he said should align with UN maritime laws.

He identified the Myanmar crisis as a top priority, endorsing ASEAN’s consensus plan.

Horta also discussed the increasing foreign investment interest in Timor-Leste, including a planned LNG plant by a major Japanese company.

The Head of State said more nations will open embassies in Dili. Regarding ambassadors, he prioritizes areas of expertise over party affiliation.

The President of the Republic also spoke about the incident that occurred in Portugal, saying the Catholic Church in Timor-Leste has already issued an apology statement, but Timor-Leste must first wait and respect the Portuguese justice system, as the case is now in their hands.

The meeting allowed the President to share his vision for journalists in Timor-Leste to play their important roles in providing accurate information and being more aligned with national goals and efforts.
