DILI, 15 january 2025 (TATOLI) – South Korean impeached President Yoon Suk Yeol has today been arrested by investigators over his attempt to impose martial law bid early last month.

Yoon Suk Yeol, who served as the 13th president of South Korea since 2022, is the first sitting president in the country’s history to be arrested.

Authorities now have 48 hours to question Yoon after which they must seek a warrant to detain him for up to 20 days or release him, Reuters reported.

Yoon’s lawyers have said the arrest warrant is illegal because it was issued by a court in the wrong jurisdiction and the team set up to investigate him had no legal mandate to do so. A warrant to search Yoon at his residence, a copy of which was seen by Reuters, referred to Yoon as “ringleader of insurrection”, according to Reuters.

If Yoon is found guilty of insurrection over his short-lived effort to impose martial law, then he could face death penalty or life in jail.

It is recalled that in december 2024, thousands of people took to the snowed-in streets of the South Korean capital, Seoul, to protest against Yoons’ martial law, causing political chaos in the country.

The protesters called for Yoon’s ouster and arrest, supporting the investigators’ efforts to arrest him over his failed martial law.

Thousands of demonstrators, including Yang Kyung-soo, leader of the Korean Confederation of Trade, wanted Yoon to be punished for denying the constitution.

In december 2024, the South Korean lawmakers impeached President Yoon Suk Yeol over his failed attempt to impose martial law.
