DILI, 05 February 2025 (TATOLI) – At its meeting on February 5th, 2025, the Council of Ministers approved a new package of investments in infrastructure totaling 5.99 million US dollars, covering flood and erosion protection projects, road rehabilitation and the expansion of the electricity grid.

In the area of flood and erosion protection, expenditure was authorized for the installation of gabion boxes on the Laclo River, in the municipality of Manufahi, and for the construction of a protection wall on the Bolobu River, in Bobonaro, with the aim of reinforcing the safety of communities and mitigating the impacts of floods.

In the road sector, the Council of Ministers approved expenditure for the rehabilitation of the Remexiu-Laclo stretch, which crosses the municipalities of Aileu and Manatuto, and for the construction of protective structures along the Viqueque-Beaço stretch, to strengthen the mobility of local populations.

In the area of electrification, expenses were authorized for the installation of transmission and distribution lines and transformers in various villages in the municipality of Ermera, with the aim of guaranteeing access to electricity in rural regions that still face limitations in this essential service.

Since the beginning of the IX Constitutional Government’s mandate, on July 1st, 2023, a comprehensive infrastructure investment plan has been implemented, encompassing the modernization and expansion of the road, electricity and water supply networks, as well as strengthening protection against natural disasters. One of the main focuses of this investment has been the implementation of measures to mitigate floods and other natural disasters, through the construction of drainage systems, the reinforcement of riverbanks and the installation of containment structures to protect the most vulnerable communities. This effort is aimed not only at improving connectivity and national resilience, but also at promoting sustainable development and creating favorable conditions for economic growth and improving the population’s quality of life.

The General State Budget for 2025, under the slogan “Investment in strategic infrastructure, strengthening the economy and improving the well-being of citizens”, reflects this commitment by earmarking 227.3 million US dollars for strategic infrastructure. This amount covers the construction, rehabilitation and maintenance of roads and bridges, protection measures against natural disasters, the rehabilitation of Nicolau Lobato International Airport and the expansion of fiber optics, water supply, sanitation and electricity networks.
