President Horta expresses condolences on the passing of Aga Khan

DILI, 10 February 2025 (TATOLI) – The President of the Republic, Jose Ramos Horta expressed his profound sadness at the passing of His Highness Prince Karim Aga Khan, spiritual leader of the Ismaili Muslim community and renowned humanitarian leader.

In a letter of condolence addressed to His Highness Prince Rahim Aga Khan, on February 05th, 2025, President Ramos-Horta stated: “It was with great sadness that I received the news of the passing away of His Highness Prince Karim Aga Khan, a spiritual leader of remarkable wisdom, a humanist of extraordinary generosity, and a tireless advocate for development and human dignity across the world.”

“The legacy of His Highness Prince Karim Aga Khan transcends borders and generations. His commitment to eradicating poverty, promoting education, strengthening public health, and valuing culture stands as a testament to his vision and unwavering dedication to the well-being of humanity. His tireless work through the Aga Khan Development Network will continue to inspire leaders and global citizens to follow in his footsteps in the pursuit of a more just, inclusive, and prosperous world,” Horta said in a statement.

The President extended his deepest condolences to Prince Rahim Aga Khan, the Aga Khan Family, and the global Ismaili Community during this time of mourning.

The Head of State also expressed hope that “the memory of his extraordinary legacy brings comfort and inspiration to all who had the privilege of knowing and working alongside him.”

His Highness Prince Karim Aga Khan served as the 49th hereditary Imam of the Shia Ismaili Muslims, leading the community’s spiritual and material progress for over six decades. Through the Aga Khan Development Network, he pioneered sustainable development initiatives that have improved the lives of millions across the developing world.

His Highness Prince Rahim Aga Khan passed away peacefully at the age of 88, in Lisbon, Portugal on Tuesday 04th February 2025, surrounded by his family.
