DILI, 11 February 2025 (TATOLI) – The General Directorate of Housing and Urbanism of the Ministry of Public Works organizes an awareness campaign related to the Urban Development and Housing Legal Framework.
The campaign aimed to disseminate information on the Urban Development and Housing Legal Framework to the local authorities and Chinese businessmen in Dili.
The Minister of Public Works, Samuel Marçal, said that although the Urban Development and Housing Law was approved in 2022, it is still unknown to many people, saying therefore, disseminating information on the law is needed to prevent people from building houses in areas prone to natural disasters.
“The aim of this awareness campaign is to inform all parties that, when building houses and commercial establishments, they must obtain licenses from the government, as the law prohibits building houses in areas prone to natural disasters and public spaces,” Marçal said at the Novo Turismo Hotel in Dili.
The Director General of the General Directorate of Housing and Urbanism, Domingos Sequeira, said that the law was set to be implemented at the beginning of 2023, but has been suspended because the community is still unaware of it.
Sequeira explained that once the law is implemented, breaching it will result in a fine ranging from US$250 to US$10,000.
