DILI, 19 February 2025 (TATOLI) – The Holy See Press Office revealed that Pope Francis has pneumonia in both his lungs following a CT scan on Tuesday.
“The control chest CT scan that the Holy Father underwent this afternoon, prescribed by the Vatican health team and the medical team of the “A. Gemelli” Hospital Foundation, showed the onset of bilateral pneumonia that required further drug therapy,” Holy See Press Office said in a statement.
The Vatican said Pope Francis will remain in the hospital for pneumonia treatment as the laboratory examinations, thoracic x-ray, and clinical conditions of the Holy Father continue to present a complex picture: Nevertheless, “Pope Francis is in good spirits.”
“The polymicrobial infection, which arose on a background of bronchiectasis and asthmatic bronchitis, and which required the use of cortisone antibiotic therapy, makes therapeutic treatment more complex,” the statement reads.
The statement concluded that on Tuesday morning, the Holy Father received the Eucharist and, during the day, he alternated rest with prayer and reading texts.
The Pope extended his gratitude for the support he has been receiving and kindly requested that Catholics continue to pray for him.
Catholic leaders and Catholic faithful in Timor-Leste united in prayer for Pope Francis after pneumonia diagnosis on Tuesday.
Double pneumonia is an infection that affects both lungs and can make breathing difficult.
On Friday (14/02) the Holy Father was admitted to Rome’s Agostino Gemelli Hospital after being diagnosed with bronchitis.
Pope Francis visited Timor-Leste in September 2024, becoming the first pope to visit the country since John Paul II in 1989.
The visit was a significant moment for the country, which gained independence from Indonesia in 2002.
The peak of Pope Francis’s historic visit to Timor-Leste was the celebration of Holy Mass in Tasi Tolu, attended by an estimated 600,000 faithful—almost half of the Timorese population.
