DILI, 20 February 2025 (TATOLI) – President of the Republic J. Ramos-Horta hosted the Annual Diplomatic Reception at the Presidential Palace today, emphasizing Timor-Leste’s commitment to “Building Bridges, Fostering Partnerships.”
In his address to the diplomatic corps, Ramos-Horta highlighted the nation’s achievement as Asia’s most democratic country, ranking 10th globally in press freedom, while announcing the country’s successful entry into the World Trade Organization in 2024.
The President reported remarkable progress in national development, including the expansion of healthcare professionals from 21 doctors in 2002 to nearly 1,300 today, and the growth of higher education with 17 universities now serving approximately 60,000 students.
He also emphasized the country’s fiscal responsibility with a 16% debt-to-GDP ratio and significant infrastructure investments, including a US$400 million power sector development reaching nearly 100% of the national territory.
A major highlight of the past year was Pope Francis’s historic visit, which President Ramos-Horta described as transformative for the nation. The event showcased Timor-Leste’s organizational capabilities and strengthened its international standing as the country prepares for full ASEAN membership in 2025.
The reception, which featured exhibitions of UNESCO-recognized Tais textiles and paintings, concluded with the President inviting diplomatic representatives to explore Lauhata in Liquiçá Municipality, demonstrating Timor-Leste’s commitment to showcasing its natural beauty and tourism potential to the international community.
