DILI, 18 March 2025 (TATOLI) – NGO Ba Futuru, with the support of the UNICEF and the Ministry of Youth, Sport, Art and Culture (MoYSAC) on Monday organized a capacity building and training for Youth Representatives from 10 Sucos (villages) in Dili.

The training covered a variety of topics, including conflict resolution, life skills, leadership, and state budget processes. (Capitalization corrected for consistency unless these are official course titles.)

Twenty Youth Representatives from 10 Sucos in Dili, including Becora, Bairo-Pite, Manleuana, Madohi, Hera, Bebonuk, Comoro, Caicoli, and Santa Cruz, attended the training.

Representatives from UNICEF and the Ministry of Youth, Sport, Art and Culture (MoYSAC) also attended the opening session of the training.

This activity is part of a four-year project titled “Adolescent and Youth Driving Change in Timor-Leste”, which aims to strengthen youth civic participation by empowering adolescents, young people, and youth leaders at the suku level.

In his opening remarks, Firminio Dias Quintas, National Director for Youth Development at MoYSAC, stated, “Youth Suku Representatives can only effectively represent the youth in their Suku if they are well-trained. Opportunities like today’s training are crucial.”

Soumen Ray, Chief of Planning, Monitoring, Evaluation, and Social Policy at UNICEF, said, “This project aims to promote youth civic participation at all levels by providing platforms for adolescents and young people to engage in decision-making processes.”

“Only through active participation in these processes can youth contribute to and influence the changes they want to see in the sectors that affect them the most,” Ray said in a statement.

Judith Maria de Sousa, Director of BaFuturu, added, “Continued capacity building for Youth Representatives is essential, as it determines the quality of services, they will provide to the youth population in their Sucos.”
