President Horta and U.S Air Force General discuss strengthening bilateral security cooperation

DILI, 03 April 2025 (TATOLI) – The President of the Republic, Jose Ramos Horta met with the U.S Air Force General Steven Nordhaus, Chief of the National Guard Bureau, at the Nicolau Lobato Presidential Palace, for discussions on strengthening bilateral security cooperation between Timor-Leste and the United States.

General Nordhaus is visiting Timor-Leste from April 3 to 4, 2025, to advance security relations and the State Partnership Program with Rhode Island.

On April 4, General Nordhaus will participate in the official handover ceremony of the Aircraft Hangar and Humanitarian Assistance and Disaster Response Warehouse to the F-FDTL Air Component in Baucau and conduct meetings with government officials.

During his two-day visit, General Nordhaus will also hold high-level discussions with Prime Minister Xanana Gusmão, Minister of Defense Donaciano do Rosário Gomes, and Vice Chief of Defense, Major General Calisto dos Santos Coliati. The discussions will focus on deepening bilateral military cooperation, enhancing defense capabilities, and facilitating the exchange of strategic expertise.

“Such collaborations play an integral role in supporting regional stability and security across the Indo-Pacific,” said the U.S Embassy.

General Nordhaus’s visit underscores U.S. commitment to strengthening security ties with Timor-Leste and fostering a shared vision of peace and prosperity.

This key engagement, conducted within the framework of the State Partnership Program, underscores the enduring partnership between the United States and Timor-Leste.
