DILI, 15 April 2025 (TATOLI) – Timor-Leste President and Nobel Peace Laureate, Jose Ramos Horta, extended his deepest condolences to His Majesty Sultan Ibrahim, the King of Malaysia, the Royal Family, the Government, and the people of Malaysia following the passing of former Prime Minister Tun Abdullah Ahmad Badawi.
In an official letter of condolence delivered to His Majesty on April 15, 2025, President Horta honored the legacy of the former Malaysian leader who served as Prime Minister from 2003 to 2009.
The Head of State wrote. “We will always remember with admiration the legacy of the late Tun Abdullah Ahmad Badawi — a statesman of serenity, integrity, and compassion, who dedicated his life to the service of his country and the well-being of his Nation.”
Horta said that during his tenure as Prime Minister from 2003 to 2009, he led Malaysia with wisdom and moderation, fostering stability, economic development, and social cohesion, while promoting a vision of a progressive and tolerant Islam: “His inspiring leadership also contributed to strengthening cooperation and friendship within ASEAN — values that Timor-Leste shares and will continue to uphold.”
The President expressed hope that the memory of Abdullah Ahmad Badawi remains a source of inspiration for future generations in Malaysia and Southeast Asia.
Timor-Leste and Malaysia enjoy strong bilateral relations built on mutual respect and cooperation, with both nations working together on various regional initiatives.
