DILI, 15 April 2025 (TATOLI) – Timor-Leste, through its Embassy in Myanmar, has extended humanitarian aid to families and communities affected by the recent earthquake in Myanmar.
Humanitarian aid, such as rice, cooking oil, canned sardines, instant noodles, soap, toothpaste, blankets, tarpaulins, medicines, and insect repellents, was handed over last Friday to the Myanmar Red Cross Society (MRCS) to be distributed to the earthquake-affected communities.
The Acting Chargé d’Affaires at the Timor-Leste Embassy in Myanmar, Olandino de Andrade, said that the humanitarian aid was initiated in response to Myanmar’s request for international assistance following the deadly earthquake that struck the country on March 28.
Earlier this month, the Government of Timor-Leste approved a voluntary contribution of US$ 500,000 to the ASEAN Coordinating Centre for Humanitarian Assistance (AHA Centre) to support the response to the emergency in Myanmar.
The 7.7-magnitude earthquake was the strongest to hit the country, causing serious consequences, including human loss, population displacement, and the destruction of social, economic, and environmental infrastructure.
The earthquake has killed more than 3,500 people, while thousands more were injured and many are still missing, according to Myanmar’s military junta.
