DILI, 18 July 2025 (TATOLI) – The President of the Republic, Jose Ramos Horta, on Thursday, 17 July 202, received Guinea-Bissau’s highest national decoration, the Amílcar Cabral Medal, during a solemn state ceremony.
The distinction was conferred through Presidential Decree No. 20/2025, signed on July 14 by Guinea-Bissau President General Umaro Sissoco Embaló.
The decoration recognizes President Ramos-Horta’s decisive role in the struggle for self-determination and independence of the Timorese people, as well as his invaluable contribution to consolidating peace, democracy, and solidarity among African and Lusophone peoples, in accordance with Amílcar Cabral’s ideals.
The ceremony took place during the official visit of the Nobel Peace Prize laureate to Guinea-Bissau, aimed at strengthening ties of friendship, brotherhood, and cooperation between the two nations. President Embaló emphasized that the visit demonstrates the elevated qualities of the Timorese statesman and expresses the profound appreciation of the Guinean people for Ramos-Horta’s contribution to strengthening relations between Guinea-Bissau and Timor-Leste.
The Amílcar Cabral Medal, established by Law No. 4/73 of September 24, represents Guinea-Bissau’s highest national distinction and was awarded with the solemnity reserved for acts of state, reflecting the diplomatic importance of strengthening relations between the two Lusophone nations.
