DILI, 28 August 2025 (TATOLI) – The first edition of the Dili International Expo 2025 is being held at the Dili Convention Center until September 1, under the theme ‘Create and Define the Brand’. The event seeks to promote Timorese products in regional and global markets.
The initiative is organized by the Ministry of Trade and Industry (MTI) in partnership with the Timor-Leste Chamber of Commerce and Industry (CCI-TL).
This expo brings together 93 international companies from Indonesia, Cambodia, Malaysia, Singapore, Fiji, India, Australia, and China, including Macau, alongside 157 national micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs).
A total of 250 stands showcase a diverse range of products, from internationally awarded Timorese coffee to traditional handicrafts, gastronomy, natural cosmetics, textiles, and technological innovation.
Speaking at the opening ceremony, Prime Minister Xanana Gusmão emphasized the expo’s role in positioning Timor-Leste as “an investment destination and a hub of economic opportunities in the region.”
“This is our way of telling the world that Timor-Leste is open for business. The Expo is an opportunity for our entrepreneurs to display innovation, culture, and technology, while building networks, forging partnerships, and exploring export markets,” he said.
Gusmão recalled that after restoring independence, the country consolidated institutions, stability, and democracy but now faces the challenge of achieving economic sovereignty.
He stressed that job creation and poverty reduction are top priorities, particularly as two-thirds of the population is under 35 years old.
The Prime Minister also noted that Timor-Leste’s upcoming accession to the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), scheduled for October, will open new markets and integrate the country into regional value chains.
Every Timorese product that replaces an import strengthens our independence,” Gusmão underlined, “and every one that reaches international markets gives true meaning to our sovereignty.
Trade and Industry Minister Filipus Nino Pereira described the Expo as a historic milestone for the private sector, creating bridges between local producers and international investors.
“Today we are making history. We are opening our doors to the world not only to showcase who we are but also to invite partners to invest and grow with us. This Expo connects producers to global markets, international capital to Timorese potential, and our ancestral heritage to future innovation,” he said.
He highlighted the central role of MSMEs, calling them the “heart of the Timorese economy” and the main drivers of the Expo.
“Every product on display carries a story and enormous growth potential. Our message to national entrepreneurs is clear: shine, showcase your work, and embrace global ambitions. The world is here, waiting for you,” Pereira added.
CCI-TL President Jorge Serrano praised the partnership between the public and private sectors in organizing the fair and said the event marks a new chapter in the country’s economic development.
“This platform promotes our products, attracts investment, and strengthens partnerships. It is also a space to learn from international experiences and to enhance our business ecosystem with innovation, quality, and sustainability,” Serrano said.
