DILI, 01 march 2022 (TATOLI) – The Government of Timor-Leste, through the Minister of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation (MNEK) held a bilateral meeting with her Singhalese counterpart, Gamini Lakshman Peiris, to establish bilateral relations between the two countries.
Both ministers began by first expressing their desire to establish diplomatic relations between Timor-Leste and Sri Lanka, considering the historical relations of the two nations.
At the meeting, Minister Magno also informed about Timor-Leste’s candidacy to the Human Rights Council for the period of 2024-2026.
In addition, the two ministers also talked and shared the importance of respecting human rights and the State’s right to self-determination.
During the meeting, Minister Magno was accompanied by the Permanent Representative of Timor-Leste to the United Nations Office and other International Organizations in Geneva, Lurdes Bessa, and Permanent Representative of Timor-Leste to the United Nations in New York, Karlito Nunes, and Advisor of Minister Magno, Natalia Sarmento.
Meanwhile, Sri Lanka is an island country in the Indian Ocean. It lies just 30 kilometres south-east of India. It has mountains in the south-central region. Elsewhere it is mainly low lying with flat coastal plains. The country has many sandy beaches and lagoons.
